2019 Colorado Auctioneer Champion

Michael Nichols of Flagler, Colorado, was crowned the 2019 Colorado State Auctioneer Champion on Saturday, January 5, 2019, at the Colorado Auctioneers Association Annual Convention.  Competitors from all over Colorado and Kansas  performed in front of an esteemed panel of judges including International and State Champion Auctioneers.

Fourteen contestants vied for the coveted honor of winning the Chuck Cumberlin “Go Your Best” Traveling Trophy, a custom-designed championship belt buckle and a $1000 award to represent the Colorado Auctioneers Association at the 2019 International Auctioneer Championship (IAC) to be held in New Orleans, LA of July 2019.  The competition consists of two rounds of auctioneering at a live, public auction and an interview portion pertaining to the auction industry and the Colorado Auctioneers Association for the five finalists held at the convention.  Each contestant is judged on appearance and presentation, body language, chant and desirability to be hired by the judge.

Michael is a second-generation auctioneer, graduating from the September 2014 World Wide College of Auctioneering class that was held in Denver, CO.  At the 2011 CAA Convention, Mike was awarded the Troil Welton Memorial Award for the CAA First Timers Competition that represents auctioneers attending the CAA Convention that have graduated from auction school within a year of the convention being held.  Troil Welton, of Wray, Colorado, was known for the encouragement he gave to young, aspiring auctioneers.

Michael shares with us a little of his history growing up within the auction industry and in becoming involved in the auction industry.

“As a very young boy I can remember on several occasions when my father would practice his chant as we were driving down the road in one of our old farm pick-ups.  I remember working with my brothers and father helping set up some sales and running tickets as I got a little older.  As a teenager, I specifically recall one particular estate sale.  I was helping Dad clean out an old log farm shed with a dirt floor and as we were placing items in a perfectly straight line; Chuck Cumberlin walked by with a smile on his face, Diet Coke in his hand, and asked with a chuckle, “Have you swept out the dirt floor yet?”  I just smiled and we kept on working.  Lance Nichols and Kenny Holzworth were dragging and lifting old equipment in rows with an old Farmall tractor with F11 loader having a great time in the process.

I attended my first CAA Convention in 2012 and it was incredible!  As a first-time member watching, listening and learning from the professional auctioneers in our association, it was an eye opening experience.  The various competitions at the CAA Convention have always been top notch and the First-Timers Bid Calling Contest was no different that year. Earning the coveted, Troil Welton Memorial Award, was a big confidence builder and a great honor for me.  The years following, I gave my best effort to be an active and engaged member and was fortunate to serve on the Board of Directors.  The people of the CAA are what makes this association so special, the people is what keeps me coming back for more, year after year.  The education, experience and fellowship with our members is truly a blessing to us all.

Ever since joining the CAA, earning the Colorado State Auctioneer Championship title has always been one of my goals.  I have competed in the contest since 2013 and made the finals from 2014-2019.  The caliber of individuals who compete in our annual competition are excellent auctioneers and I was proud to compete along side all of them.  Receiving feedback and direction from our peers is an education that you can’t get from anywhere else.

I am proud to be co-owner of Nichols Auctioneers and work alongside my brother and father.  I know that our family will continue to be active members in the CAA for many years to come and the Nichols family might have a few more young auctioneers to introduce to the CAA in coming years.  I am honored to serve as your 2019 Colorado State Auctioneer Champion and look forward to upholding the grand tradition of the Colorado Auctioneers Association.”

Respectfully,
Michael Nichols

Each professional auctioneer who competed became a better auctioneer because of the contest and should be congratulated for taking part.  Their improvement and growth as auctioneers makes the association and the industry better for all.  Thank you to Wavebid for providing the auction clerking software and clerking the auction.
